If you are interested in the latest (water) situation, then waterinfo.be isyour information source of choice. Detailed maps and graphs informyou about four major themes:

 Flooding

Numerous measuring devices keepa close watch on the Flemish watercourses. They continuously measure water levels, flows and precipitation. Accurate weather forecasts from the RMI also allow usto look into the future.

Smart calculation models combine all data intodynamic flood maps. They simulate the state of the watercourse andcalculate whether flooding is imminent in the coming days. A simple colour code warns of any danger. calculate whether flooding is imminent in the coming days.

Tides

Ebb and flow determine the water level along our coast. The Zeeschelde and its tidal tributaries too are affected. If a spring tide coincides with a storm at sea, flooding may be imminent.

Measurements and forecasts of the riverand sea level are therefore essential. Freeboard maps, for example, indicate how far thewater may rise before it spills over the dykes and quay walls. The portal sitewarns you in time of an imminent storm surge. That way, you can postpone the tripyou planned or move your parked car.

Rainfall

Rainfall oftenplays the major role in flooding. Clear rainfall maps allow you totrack and quantify rainfall. Animated radar images let you trackrain clouds in real time. Straightforward graphs and maps display rainfall forecastsfor the upcoming hours and days. Should I take my umbrella or not? Find outhere!

Drought

Not only too much water, but also water shortagesmay cause damage. Persistent drought may create problems for farmers, whilst low water levels and flows have an adverse impact onsmooth shipping traffic. Waterinfo.be assembles accurate data andprocesses them into clear rainfall deficit maps.  Drought indicators and low water reportsmake it possible to estimate the severity of a potential drought.

What is waterinfo.be?

This portal site is a joint effort of the Flemish water resource managers and knowledge institutes. All our measurements and forecasts are broughttogether on this site. This allows appropriate measures to be taken in order tominimise water damage.

In Flanders, a dense network of navigable watercourses drives oureconomy forward, whilst non-navigable rivers, streams and canalsadorn the landscape. Most of the time, the water passes by, unnoticed, to the sea. Until heavyor prolonged rainfall comes along. A storm surge from the sea, dyke breaches or sewers, which no longer drain properly, can also cause flooding.

All kinds of smart measures allow the Flemish government to keep the situationunder control. However, flooding cannot be totally prevented. The prime concern then is to limit the damage. Correct informationis of paramount importance in this respect.

Waterinfo.be keeps you informed!
